This Championship, formally know as
the Leon Brogden Senior Amateur Golf Championship, has partnered with TIME WARNER CABLE, in order to truly become an area wide
senior golf championship, which of course is what Leon Brogden Jr. wanted.
The name Leon Brogden is synonymous with
athletic excellence in the Cape Fear Area. First, Coach Leon Brogden had
numerous championship teams in football, basketball, and baseball during his
illustrious coaching career at New Hanover High School. He is also a member of
the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. His oldest son, Leon Jr., was an avid
golfer and the Echo Farms Club Champion on several occasions. Leon Brogden Jr.
passed away in the Spring of 2002. In honor of both, this Amateur Golf
Championship has been established. The net proceeds from the tournament are
given to the Leon Brogden Scholarship Foundation. This foundation awards
college scholarships to athletes from New Hanover County annually.
